Tourism in Mauritius Continues to Grow

The tourist sector continues to take off. 880,890 tourists traveled the Mauritian soil during the first nine months of the year. This is what emerges from the report published by Statistics Mauritius on Friday 25 November. A figure that represents an increase of 9.7% compared to the same period last year. By 2015, 803,755 vacationers had come to Mauritius from January to September.

Our issuing markets, of which France is at the top of the ranking, rose by 6.2% against 5.4% in 2015. Behind the French are the Reunion Islanders and the British. Germany, which is in fifth place, this year again achieved a not insignificant increase of 39.5% against 16.5% last year.

There is also a three-digit increase in Turkish tourists, which is 363.8%. This increase would be linked to the introduction of direct flights between Mauritius and Turkey, according to Statistics Mauritius. On the other hand, the majority of Germans, Italians and English transited through the United Arab Emirates while there are direct flights between Mauritius and these three countries.

In addition to growth, declines in tourist arrivals are also reported in the report, including those from China. Tourists from the Middle Kingdom had risen from 50, 645 in 2014 to 71, 040 in 2015. But this year Statistics Mauritius figures show that 62,691 Chinese visited the country from January to September 2016, Represents a decrease of 11.8%.
